What's included in an annual lift inspection

An annual inspection is more than a quick look and a sticker. Following the inspection points required by the lift manufacturer and ANSI/ALI ALOIM, our inspector examines the lift's structural, mechanical, hydraulic, air and electrical systems. Depending on the lift, that can be up to 120 inspection points. We raise and lower the lift with a vehicle on it to confirm the lowering speed and to watch how the lift behaves when stopped in a raised position. We check that every control returns to neutral or “off” when released. We also review the safety labels, operating instructions, vehicle lifting points information and your operator training records.

When the inspection is complete, you receive a written record of every inspection point, including observations, adjustments made and any parts replaced. Lifts that pass receive the current year's serialized ALI Annual Lift Inspection Label bearing our inspector ID. Keep the report on file: it is your proof of inspection.

Why annual inspections matter: ANSI/ALI ALOIM and OSHA

ANSI/ALI ALOIM, the American National Standard for automotive lift operation, inspection and maintenance, requires the lift owner or employer to have every lift inspected at least annually by a qualified lift inspector “in order to ensure reliability and the continued safe operation of the lift.” That applies to every vehicle lift on site, regardless of type, age or manufacturer. ALI notes that health and safety officials, including OSHA under its General Duty Clause, regularly ask for proof of annual inspections and operator training during site visits.

Beyond compliance, regular inspections catch worn parts and small problems before they become expensive failures or injuries. That protects your technicians, reduces lift downtime and keeps your bays productive. If you just installed a lift, ALI recommends inspecting it before it goes into service to document the model, serial number, certification status and safety materials.

Why use an ALI Certified inspector? ALI's program independently tests inspectors and certifies that they can properly inspect any lift from any manufacturer. Certified inspectors follow ALI's Code of Ethics and standardized inspection documentation. You can confirm our status in ALI's public directory: Blue Wave Lift & Equipment ALI inspector profile.

Lift inspection FAQ

How often does an automotive lift need to be inspected?

At least once a year. ANSI/ALI ALOIM requires every vehicle lift to be inspected annually by a qualified lift inspector, regardless of type, age or manufacturer. Heavily used lifts may need more frequent checks under the manufacturer's instructions.

Is an annual lift inspection required by OSHA?

The annual inspection requirement comes from the ANSI/ALI ALOIM national standard. Safety officials, including OSHA under its General Duty Clause, regularly check for proof of annual lift inspections and operator training during site visits.

Can you inspect a lift that isn't ALI certified, or a brand you didn't install?

Yes. Every lift should be inspected whether or not it is ALI certified, and we inspect lifts of every make and model, no matter who installed them.

What do I get after the inspection?

A written record of every inspection point with observations, adjustments and any parts replaced. Lifts that pass get the current year's ALI Annual Lift Inspection Label with our inspector ID.

What happens if my lift fails?

We explain exactly what needs attention and why, and recommend only the repairs your lift actually needs. Our factory-trained technicians can make the repairs and get the lift back in service.
